‘Arabic from the Beginning: Part One’ provides the absolute beginner with a solid foundation to start learning how to read and write the Arabic script. It assumes no prior knowledge of Modern Standard Arabic. It takes the learner through the Arabic alphabet and teaches how to join the letters and read simple words with short vowel sounds. The long vowels are then introduced, the diphthongs ‘-ay’ and ‘-ow’, and the tanween word endings. The student is also taught the roles of the sukoon and shadda, as well as how to read words that contain a hamza or an alif al-maqsura. Lastly, a section on the sun and moon letters teaches the learner how to read words defined by ‘al-’ (‘the’). The book is supported through a YouTube series entitled ‘Arabic from the Beginning delivered by the author to help the student develop good pronunciation and handwriting skills.
By the end of the book, the learner should be able to read and write simple vowelized sentences in Modern Standard Arabic and to pronounce them accurately.
